Sir Kenneth “Ken” Jackson, a towering figure in British trade unionism and a staunch supporter of the Joint Industry Board, passed away on 25 July 2024, at the age of 87. Born in Wigan, Lancashire, on 3 March 1937, Sir Ken dedicated his life to championing the rights of workers, leaving an indelible mark on the electrical and engineering industries over a remarkable career spanning more than four decades.
Sir Ken’s journey began in the Royal Air Force, where he served as an electrical technician. This experience not only honed his technical skills but also ignited a lifelong commitment to advocating for the welfare and rights of workers. After his service, he transitioned to civilian life by joining Plessey in 1961, where his natural leadership qualities quickly became apparent. By 1966, he was elected Branch Secretary of the Electrical Trades Union, which later evolved into the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EETPU).
By 1987, Sir Ken had risen to the position of executive councillor of the EETPU, and in 1992, he was appointed its President. His leadership was instrumental during the union’s incorporation into the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) in 1995, where he was elected General Secretary. When the AEEU later merged with the Manufacturing Science and Finance Union (MSF), Sir Ken continued his leadership as Joint General Secretary of the newly formed Amicus until 2002.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the trade union movement, Sir Ken was knighted in 1999. His legacy is one of unwavering dedication to the industry, marked by his ability to balance the interests of workers with the broader needs of the sector.
Sir Ken Jackson is survived by his beloved wife, Rene, and their children.
